Besides those branded memory makers, Patriot is another popular memory brand which was established in 1985. Most of the Patriot's products are quite similar with other memory makers where they have value memory modules, extreme performance modules, flash drive, SSD, memory card and etc. Today we will take a look on their Extreme Performance Enhanced Latency PC2 8500 memory modules.
Established in 1985, Patriot Memory builds a full range of memory module and flash memory products, offering a perfect blend of quality and value. Patriot products include Extreme Performance (EP), Signature Lines (SL) and Flash Memory solutions (FM).
Patriot's goal is to be your memory solutions provider with high quality products and services that are value priced. Package & Contents
Patriot PVS24G8500ELKR2 comes with a transparent soft plastic container which is quite standard for memory. Transparent packaging is good as it is more attractive but we prefer a sealed hard packaging box over this soft unsealed packaging for better protection and security purpose.
The basic specifications of Patriot PVS24G8500ELKR2 are written on the packaging box as well; PC2-8500, 1066MHz, 4GB (2 x 2GB) Kit and 5-5-5-15 timing which are the most important information when selecting a memory. Some basic product specifications, features, warranty and company profile information is listed on the user's manual.
Patriot DDR2 Viper PC 8500
As we mentioned before Patriot has two series of memory modules; Extreme Performance and Signature Line. Signature Line series memory are budget and value modules so no additional heat spreader is included however for Extreme Performance series memory, heat spreader is included for better cooling performance. Among these Extreme Performance series memory modules, there are two sub categories; Bladed and Viper where Bladed memory modules comes with basic heat spreader while Viper memory modules come with advanced and unique heat spreader.
Besides those sub categories that we have discussed above, basically Patriot also offers other DDR2/3 series memory modules; some are purposely designed for NVIDIA based chipsets, Tri-channel for Core i7 processor or bundled together with Futuremark 3DMark Vantage Software. Patriot PVS24G8500ELKR2 is a standard DDR 2 Viper series memory module from Extreme Performance which is a PC-2 8500 (1066MHz) memory modules and equipped with 5-5-5-15 low latency timing at only 2.1V; other may needs at least 2.2 or 2.3V for achieving such high speed with low latency.
The Viper heat spreader of Patriot PVS24G8500ELKR2 is made by Aluminum Copper materials (ACC) which are widely used on cooling sector with its low cost but great dissipation & conduction features. The whole heat spreader is in black color and this fish bone heat spreader is quite unique than those standard memory modules where its memory module is surrounded by two individual memory heat spreaders by using strong glue. Such great heat spreader should able to cool down the memory chip very well since its dissipation surface area are greatly increased with its unique design.
Each of the memory modules of Patriot PVS24G8500ELKR2 contains total eight FBGA memory chipsets on both sides. Besides that based on the information that we get, Hynix memory chipset; HY5PS1G831C is used for Patriot PVS24G8500ELKR2 which is a high capacity memory chips with low latency.
Installation, Testing & Performance
There is nothing much need to talk about the memory installation since it is pretty simple; take note on the memory knob and install the memory modules on memory slot of the motherboard correctly. For those dual channel supported motherboard, ensure the right slots are populated; same color slots and most of the time will be slots 1-3 and 2-4. For those are having casing space constraint where the memory slot clip might be blocked by those giant high end graphic card hence removing the graphic card before the memory modules is required which will roughly take additional few minutes only.

Here are some CPUZ screenshot of Patriot PVS24G8500ELKR2. We found something very interesting about Patriot PVS24G8500ELKR2 as at default, the memory will be running at 1066MHz speed without any manual tweaking that we always do for other DDR2 1066MHz memory. This is good especially those computer newbie as it save the time to fine tune the BIOS setting in order to make the system run at the expected memory speed. For our test setup, the FSB:DRAM ratio is 5:8 due to faster memory speed; 1066MHz over CPU Front Side Bus.
Here are some of the memory benchmarking results of Patriot PVS24G8500ELKR2 compares with one PC6400 and one PC8500 memory modules. As we you can there is advantages for Patriot PVS24G8500ELKR2 over PC6400 and PC8500 (running at 800MHz) with around + - 5% improvement. All these testing results are based on default setting without any manual tweaking which is important as not all the users will know how to tweak the BIOS so don't even talk about tweaking it correctly.
In term of overclocking, we can't really go any further for Patriot PVS24G8500ELKR2 as 1066MHz is quite high speed among DDR2 although the top speed for DDR2 is 1150MHz. However if more VDIMM is pumped then its overclocking results should be better. With additional 0.1/0.2V, Patriot PVS24G8500ELKR2 should able to get around 1150-1200MHz based on the researchs that we have collected. For the ventilation, Patriot PVS24G8500ELKR2 does a good job here as even 24/7 running, the memory modules are just warm; thanks to the advanced heat spreader and 2.1V low VDIMM.
Patriot PVS24G8500ELKR2; a 4GB (2 x 2 GB) 1066MHz 5-5-5-15 low latency kit is really a decent DDR2 high speed memory modules with great performance. Besides that Patriot PVS24G8500ELKR2 also comes with advanced but simple heat spreader which is able to cool down the memory modules effectively and no manual tweaking is required which is perfectly for newbie and those are lazy to fine tuning it. Patriot PVS24G8500ELKR2 is just priced around 82USD which is definitely a good deal and if you are looking for a pair of dual channel high speed DDR2 then you should really consider Patriot PVS24G8500ELKR2.
* Great performance
* No manual tweaking is required
* Tight timing; 5-5-5-15 at 2.1V & 1066MHz
* Unique & great performance heat spreader
* Life time warranty
* These tall heat spreaders may not compatible with certain setup
